      棱镜是透明材料(如玻璃、水晶等)做成的多面体。在光学仪器中应用很广。棱镜按其性质和用途可分为若干种。例如,在光谱仪器中把复合光分解为光谱的“色散棱镜”,较常用的是等边三棱镜;在潜望镜、双目望远镜等仪器中改变光的进行方向,从而调整其成像位置的称“全反射棱镜”,一般都采用直角棱镜。

A prism      I n optics, a prism is a transparent optical element with flat, polished surfaces that refract light. At least two of the flat surfaces must have an angle between them. The exact angles between the surfaces depend on the application. The traditional geometrical shape is that of a triangular prism with a triangular base and rectangular sides, and in colloquial use "prism" usually refers to this type. Some types of optical prism are not in fact in the shape of geometric prisms. Prisms can be made from any material that is transparent to the wavelengths for which they are designed. Typical materials include glass, plastic and fluorite.
A prism can be used to break light up into its constituent spectral colors (the colors of the rainbow). Prisms can also be used to reflect light, or to split light into components with different polarizations.
